Building the theatre inside the audience’s minds. Examples and techniques of creating and developing theatre outside conventional theatre venues

Drawing from the history of theatre in non-conventional places, from examples and from professional experience, this lecture/workshop will address the meaning and importance of doing theatre in public and private places, like private houses, churches, factories, streets, shops, boats, etc. – and propose techniques and exercises to develop plays in non-conventional stages.

Victim of political and social circumstances, Portuguese theatre always had a difficult life. The 20th century displays the different currents that trouble and feed drama and theatre in Portugal, from political and social pressures and censorship, to economic crisis, national identity and international artistic influences. This lecture will discuss the social and political context of Portuguese theatre on the 20th century and give an overview of some of the main playwrights, directors, companies and artistic practices and influences.
