Maria João Barbosa has a degree in Communication Design (Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto, 1986) and a PhD in Communication Design, programme Modes of Knowledge in Contemporary Artistic Practice, (Faculty of Fine Arts of Pontevedra, University of Vigo, 2009).
She has 36 years of experience teaching Design at higher education level (bachelor's, postgraduate, master's and doctoral degrees). She was an assistant professor of Communication Design at the School of Arts and Design (ESAD, 1989-2007). Since 2007, she has been an assistant professor in the Design Department at Lusíada University and a researcher at the Centre for Research in Design, Architecture and Territory (CITAD). She is currently also the coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree in Design. She has been recognised as a Specialist with Professional Experience and Competence in Design (Lusíada University, since 2014). Guest lecturer in the Master's Degree in Visual Arts (ESAP – Porto School of Arts, 2010-11).
She has been conducting research in the areas of Sustainable Design, Emotional Design and Design Education.
As a designer, she has been working in the areas of communication, product, packaging and interior design since 1986. She currently develops Communication Design projects for the areas of Tourism and Museums that interpret and transform cultural and natural heritage into collections.
She has provided consultancy and expertise in the areas of Communication Design applied to Portuguese Cultural Heritage.
