Short Curriculum

Maria João Moreira Soares graduated in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1987. She obtained her PhD in Architecture from Universidade Lusíada in Lisbon in 2004. Since 1989, she has taught at the Universidade Lusíada in Lisbon (ULL). She is currently an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Arts of ULL (FAAULL), where she teaches in the Design Studio area for the Integrated Master's Degree in Architecture. She is responsible for the Seminar on Phenomenology of Architecture in the PhD programme in Architecture at ULL. She is a research associate at the Research Centre Arnaldo Araújo (CEAA) and collaborates with the Research Centre for Design, Architecture, and Territory (CITAD) at ULL. She is a member of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) and the editorial board of the Athens Journal of Architecture (AJA).

Her research in architectural theory explores inter- and transdisciplinary aspects of architecture and cultural transversality. She focuses on the interrelations between Portugal and Japan in the field of architecture. She has authored and co-authored several articles and book chapters. She produced the films Aires Mateus: Matéria em Avesso (2017) and Body-Buildings (2021), both directed by Henrique Pina.
